Penny Appeal Canada invites you to our National Iftaar Tour: Breakin' Dates! Join us for a spiritual evening to embrace Ramadan together in Mississauga. We are thrilled to host our esteemed speakers Ustadh Mustafa Briggs and Shaykh Alaa Elsayed!

Ustadh Mustafa Briggs

writer & educator

Mustafa Briggs is a graduate of Arabic and International Relations from the University of Westminster whose dissertation focused on Arabic Literature and Literacy in West Africa. Mustafa started an MA in Translation at SOAS, University of London with a specialization in Arabic and Islamic Texts, before going onto al-Azhar University in Cairo, Egypt where he is currently doing another degree in Islamic Studies and Arabic. Mustafa rose to international acclaim for his ‘Beyond Bilal: Black History in Islam’ lecture series which saw him explore and uncover the deep routed relationship between Islam and Black History.

Shaykh Alaa El Sayed

Imam, Speaker & Community Leader

Sheikh Alaa was born in Cairo and lived in Egypt until he was 15 years old. During his youth, he spent his time as the goalie for the Junior National Team and moved to Toronto, Canada in the late 1970’s. Sheikh Alaa studied for his Bachelors in Shariah from the American International University and earned a scholarship from the Shari’ah Academy/Mishkah University in Florida. Sheikh Alaa has also received his ijaÂzah of Quran recitation for Hafs an Asim and studied comparative religion for five years through the IPCI in South Africa. He was on the board of directors of the World Assembly of Muslim Youth.
